Indiana Fine Woodworking uses premium hardwoods for all custom furniture and cabinetry projects. We prioritize locally-sourced Indiana hardwoods from regional sawmills when available.
Common Hardwood Species: • Walnut: Dark chocolate brown with rich, straight grain. Premium choice for dining tables and high-end cabinets. Moderately hard and very stable. • White Oak: Light tan with prominent grain patterns. Extremely durable and water-resistant. Classic choice for cabinets and tables. • Red Oak: Warm reddish tone with pronounced grain. Traditional favorite for furniture and cabinetry. Very durable. • Hard Maple: Creamy white to light tan. Very smooth, tight grain. Extremely hard and durable. Great for painted finishes and cabinets. • Cherry: Warm reddish-brown that deepens with age. Fine, smooth grain. Premium choice that develops beautiful patina over time. • Hickory: Light with dark grain streaks. Rustic character with exceptional strength. Perfect for farmhouse style. • Ash: Light colored with dramatic dark grain patterns. Strong and shock-resistant.
Exotic & Specialty Woods (Available Upon Request): • Mahogany (rich reddish-brown, premium grain) • Zebrawood (dramatic striped pattern) • Wenge (very dark, almost black) • Bubinga (reddish with unique figure)
Locally-Sourced Indiana Hardwoods: Whenever possible, we source hardwoods from Indiana sawmills and reclaimed wood suppliers. This supports local businesses, reduces transportation environmental impact, and ensures wood is properly acclimated to Indiana’s climate (important for long-term stability).
Reclaimed Wood Options: We also work with reclaimed barn wood, industrial lumber from old factories, and salvaged hardwood for unique, character-rich pieces with history.
Wood Selection Guidance: During your consultation, we help you select the perfect wood species based on: • Your aesthetic preferences (color, grain pattern, character) • Durability requirements (high-use surfaces need harder woods) • Budget considerations • Finish compatibility (some woods take stain better than others) • Aging characteristics (how the wood will look in 10-20 years)
Each wood species offers unique characteristics in grain pattern, color, hardness, workability, and aging properties. We provide wood samples and finish samples during your consultation so you can see and feel the difference before making your selection.
